okay, i think i'm an idiot - smartkeys

i was surfing ebay, bored, and thinking... wow, it would be great to have a newer key for my car (mine is looking a bit ugly). so, i looked around on ebay, saw a powerseller selling the smartkeys, and bought one (buy it now)... thinking i have the metal key part already, and reprogramming them only requires inserting a key into the ignition (according to the manual i think). so, now i have one on the way, but from what i have just read on here, you can't reprogram these keys... what gives? i figured if i take out the battery for a while, the key won't know which end is up, and will automatically reprogram with the car.... or not?

has anyone gotten a new key to work?
-mike.

RE: okay, i think i'm an idiot - smartkeys

ok heres the deal from a mb tech. smart keys are coded for only ONE vin number, and once programmed from blank, they CANNOT be changed. your local dealer canot reprogram them for you. each key contains a set of rolling codes. 200,000 to be exact.
the ignition switch, or EIS as its called by mercedes,
holds all the possible codes for up to 8 keys. once all 200,000 starts with a key has passed, it must be replaced. once you have gone through 8 keys, you have to replace the EIS. dont worry though, keys are designed to last about 40 years on a average usage schedule. that averages out to 13 starts a day, for 40 years. (according to MB) hope that helps a little. if you need more info, please send me a pm.
