Beware This Dealer

Just a heads up for anyone who might consider a Benz from Charles Schmitt Motors in St. Louis. I bought a 1991 560 SEL advertised on EBay as follows:

1991 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEL
Four door saloon. The safest and most luxurious motor car ever conceived by Mercedes-Benz. 82,901 certified one owner miles. Finished in most desired smoke silver metallic with impeccably kept deep tan leather surrounded by African burl walnut woodwork. Fitted with the awesome 5.6 liter all aluminum everlasting V8 Mercedes engine. Every refinement including power sunroof, abs brakes, power seats, and many others. All books and tools. Rigidly road tested and serviced by our top Mercedes technician. Kept in a heated and air conditioned garage. This motor car exceeded $100,000 in 1991 and is considered the best Mercedes-Benz ever conceived. This particular motor car is superior in condition and is for the most demanding connoisseur. We have been selling Mercedes-Benz for 54 years in the same location with integrity.
-DISCOUNT ~ $2,000

Here are the problems that were found when I took delivery:

• Right Rear hit heavily, poorly repaired, excessive bondo, fiber glassed bumper, broken bumper mounts, body still crooked
• Numerous bugs/fish eyes on all re-sprayed body panels.
• Rear Bumper attached on right w/ 3 visible and obvious sheet metal screws.
• Left wheel arch heavily bondoed
• Deck lid not properly aligned
• Deck lid leaks badly
• Different color paint on rear quarter and doors.
• Front pin striping paint, rear tape.
• Left front fender flare dented in excess of 1 inch.
• Right front fender mis-aligned
• Front bumper mounts misaligned/bent.
• Every panel (aside from the roof/center section) re-sprayed.
• Poor masking job on the roof.
• Poor touch up on hood/front clip with large and excessive paint chipping.
• Rear Bumper chrome heavily scratched, excessive overspray.
• Body shop dust in trunk.
• Inside of rear quarter tarred over to hide repair.

Engine/Drive train/Suspension:
• Motor Mounts/transmission/engine shock mount are collapsed.
• Flex discs need replacing (front and rear)
• Front Shocks need replacing
• Rear Self leveling not functioning properly (possibly proportioning valve or hydraulic pump)
• 1 miss matched tire
• Spare wheel Heavily gouged
• Vacuum leak causing erratic/high idle.
• Right rear differential leaking.
• Steering Box leaking/Heavy require rebuild.
• Transmission bell housing cracked
• Air cleaner very dirty
• Power steering filter clogged
• Neither horns work
• Oil pressure sending unit needs replacing
• Air conditioner works intermittently.

When I took the car back, I was subjected to a screaming, harangue and called a great many derogatory names. I was afraid the man was going to have a heart attack.

They refunded $12,000 on a car I had about $15,000 invested in. Of course I had grounds for a suit and would probably have won (according to one of St. Louis’s' best lawyers). But, I would have spent more than the above in lawyer's fees. A no win situation for the consumer.

Warn your friends.

How come there is no negative feedback for your transaction on eBay?

RE: Beware This Dealer

E-bay is a dangerous game - I personally won't buy anything "large" from e-bay without seeing it first or being able to talk to the seller before auction end.

The '95 I drive now was on e-bay, but I had the car inspected twice prior to auction end, then bought it outside of the auction.

E-bay for items over $200 scares me.

RE: Beware This Dealer

I tend to agree. This seems to be as much a "beware of eBay" thread as it is a "beware of dodgy dealers" one. I've sold car bits (engine, spares etc) on eBay but only received bids from locals, who all arranged to visit me before completing.

Sorry to hear you got stung, but if you'd viewed the car beforehand I'm guessing you wouldn't have bought it (for THAT price).
