RE: Is this a hoax?

The ad says that the device taps into the IAT. I take that to be the intake air temperature sensor. I don't know whether tricking the ECU into thinking the air is cooler or warmer than it is makes more power.

In KE Jetronic systems there's trimming resistor that sets max ignition timing (or is it advance rate?). US-spec cars have a fixed resistor, Euro cars have a selector and a half dozen resistors. Should be just as easy to put a pot in that circuit if you have good gas available to you.

RE: Is this a hoax?

I've tweaked Bosch fuel injection systems for racing by doing this sort of thing. In open-loop lambda operation the ECU matches enrichment to air supply using air temp as a basic parameter. If you add resistance, say 500 ohms, in series with the intake air temp sensor cicuit it fools the ECU into thinking it needs to provide a richer mixture than it otherwise would provide because it thinks you're driving in denser (cooler) air than you actually are.

The enrichment will typically improve full throttle performance, provide detonation protection, increase emissions and decrease mpg. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are doing some solo I or II racing and reversibly install an inline resistor with connectors on it, or if I were having a real problem with fuel grade and ping on hard acceleration in which case I'd trade off an occasional few seconds of increased emissions for a hole in a piston.
