300SE engine rpm speed

What should the engine rpm be at 70mph speed on a 91 300SE? I don't believe my car is shifting into 4th gear. Seems to be running fairly high rpm at highway speeds. (approx 3600rpm at 70mph)

Nobody's answered your question yet?

Sounds accurate more or less in top gear. Should be around 3500 at those speeds. Remember it has a 3.46 differential, so it is not a lazy engine.

RE: 300SE engine rpm speed

(approx 3600rpm at 70mph) thats way too high its a six cylinder and they normaly run at 2000rpm to 2500 at 70mph i would say its not useing 4th gear at all, check the kickdown settings are right

RE: 300SE engine rpm speed

no it's normal..
our 300E also runs about 3400-3500 at 120kph.
They do not run at 2000rpm at these speeds.

That RPM is way too high for 70MPH.

RE: 300SE engine rpm speed

hi,
I have 1989 300te,only had it couple of months, was really shocked.100 MPH RED on tacho, did post about it, was concerned, engine smooth as silk.Checked as much as I could, tyre size ok,gearbox seemed right numbers, checked speed with gear changes, etc. etc.
few months after that, more confident etc.the car goes through the red on the tacho stops at a spot with no numerals indicate about 7500 rpm no rev limiter, speedo indicates 130mph,I get scared because of rev counter, but worked with engines for long time, engine doesn't seem stressed ,so concluded that speedo or rev counter error[}:)]All on purpose built track of course[^]

RE: 300SE engine rpm speed

track cars are totally different mine hits the limiter and beyond in every gear but thats a standard dash not capable of measuring the torque and speed that i do so i use a digital read out
