RE: What's up with the numbers?

Several possible reasons:

Marketing. Some numbers just sound better than others.

Trademark issues. Maybe somebody already owns the rights to S593 or whatever.

Marketing once again. Why would you buy this years C180 when you can get last years C230 cheaper and lose 50(points?) off your car.

RE: What's up with the numbers?

It's all marketing. In the case of the C230 it's because the Twinpulse four-cylinder engine has three levels of tuning: The 230 badged model is tuned to about the same power as the old non-twinpulse 230K (which really was 2.3 litres).

The old 2.3 motor is getting to be serious value for money; 230 Kompressor C-classes are going for around 4-5 thou (sterling) here in the UK. A very cheap way to get a car which will easily tune up to 250BHP with a pulley change and a remap!

London, right in the middle
03 CL500 (Black/Grey, 48k, Comand, 7GTronic, Keyless Go) 302 Bhp
01 E430 (Silver/Black, 112k, Comand, Lingua, 7 seats, tow...) 275 Bhp
97 SLK (40k, Yellowstone, partner's car!) 200 Bhp
03 A210 AMG (Black/Black, 63k, project rescue car) 140 Bhp

...I make that 917 Bhp...!

RE: What's up with the numbers?

Yeah ... I'd still love it more if they stick with the "correct" number. Why some of them might need to re-number, others don't have to. For example, I can understand why they call S600 instead of S550 but what is wrong with having C260 or ML370? Anyway, no big deal, just curious [?][V]
