Starting Failures *URGENT HELP NEEDED!!

I have a problem that is similar to some posts from the E class section. I have trouble starting my 1995 W202 C280. From time to time, the engine could not be started but instead the cranking sound from the engine could be heard and both the infrared lights (red & green) on the rear view mirror will start to flash alternatively. I have to keep turning the ignition to the “on and the sound of the cranking keeps occurring. Eventually I gave up and took out the key and waited in the car for about 2 minutes and then the car would start up back to normal.

This case doesn’t happen all the time but I could say this is a hot start problem? It only happens unexpectedly, say that I’m going to the bank for 10 mins and return back to the car and this hot start problem will occur; leaving me to wait in the car for 2 mins before it could start again.

Anyone has encountered this problem in their 1995 C280 W202? I have been told by the dealer to replace:
· New keys
· New battery
· A voltage regulator

I have done these 2 replacements and the problem still occurs! This has been going on for 4 months now.

I am suspecting the relay or alternator may cause all these intermittent hot start problems!? I would really appreciate any comments from you guys?

*By the way, these start up failures never occurred during the first start of the day (cold start)

some times two connections such as small wires or relays have a defect where when hot the wires are not connecting and then when they cool down it starts. I had an 89 camaro with the same problem it was the ignition switch which I had to replace 3 times during the 12 years I owned the car. good luck

RE: Starting Failures *URGENT HELP NEEDED!!

thanks for the feedback bruce,

I have had all the wirings being checked by the dealer and they are ok but what kind of relays do you mean?

If a particular relay is faulty, does it have any effect on the alternator or any effect on starting up the vehicle?

Thanks.

Does anyone know the difference between a voltage regulator and an over voltage protector?

the voltage regulator prevents over voltage, usually located in the alternator, if your alternator was bad it would have dragged the battery down as well. but on some systems there are bimetalic strips of dissimular exotic metals such as the water sensor. when they heat up they separate when they cool they close. also if your key has a security chip on it and the contacts are dirty car won't start.

the OVP "over voltage protector is normally located near the battery it looks like a relay with fuses on top of it and they blow if too much volts are passed to the electrics.. the voltage regulator is in the alternator it can be changed and the brushes have to be chaged aswell but the problem with that is you dont know how long the armeture will last and it will burn the brushes out very fast so a new alternator is best, an easy way to check if you have overcharge is the battery gets fried and the fluid level drops rapid then its the alternator

RE: Starting Failures *URGENT HELP NEEDED!!

Thanks for the favourable info Bruce & Teky,

Teky, I refer to your post on “95 E320 - Won't Start When Hot, dated. 7/5/2004 1:11 AM.

I understand that you have attached a jpg labeled Trouble Shooter 3 in this thread. I could barely make out what was being advised on that notice of problems but somehow I believe your attachment could hold answers to my problem.

I would be grateful if you could be so kind to enlarge the document Bosch Motronic M3.1/ M3.2/ M3.3, Mercedes Benz HFM, especially under the topic “Engine Difficult To Start and post it in this thread or better yet, email me (thegirlilove@hotmail.com).

This intermittent failure to start the vehicle has really affected my confidence in my vehicle. I would really appreciate if you or someone could give me an advice in resolving the issue.

Thank you.

RE: Starting Failures *URGENT HELP NEEDED!!

Thanks for the notice Teky,

For your information and other viewers; these intermittent failures to start[Refer to my first post on 8/19/2004 7:24 PM (#1285933)] only occured ever since I installed and programmed my new ECU 4 months ago.

Got any ideas that this could be the root of the problem?

Any comments from anyone are greatly appreciated.

who reprogrammed the ECU by what means ( device ) used and software used and have you had it checked to see if any codes are logged, even though the mil light isn't on doesn't mean there are no soft error codes logged
