urghhhh - cd changer/player

Hi all, I am a new member to this forum as well as the proud new owner of an 03 slk230. I love everything about the car except for two things: #1 is the cd player - the bugger doesn't recognize my burned cd-r cd's [:(!] very upsetting; I have hundreds of burned cd's! #2 is I am unable to rest my head while driving! The head rest is not adjustable and is too far away from my head! Anyway, my question is can someone recommend an aftermarket cd player that is compatible with the factory installed radio and am I the only one with the headrest problem? Please, please help! Thank you so much [:I]

RE: urghhhh - cd changer/player

Wendy, welcome to the forum. Sounds like you got a great car. You might want to check out the R170 forum - a good place to search for answers to your questions.

First, the headrest. A few people on the R170 forum have bought neck pillows either from MB or on eBay and say it takes care of that.

Now the CD player. While I have seen a couple of folks make a similar complaint, it is definitely not the norm. I only use CD-R's with mine (and it is the stock player). So, I have a few questions for you. You have the stock CD changer in the trunk, right? Are you able to play a regular CD? All of your CD-R's are burned to be normal CD's or MP3? The changer is not compatible with MP3's. Did the HU give you any error message? Some folks that installed the changer after they got their car sometimes need to go to the dealer to "initialize" the system to recognize the changer. There is no aftermarket replacement for the changer - nothing is compatible with this particular fiber optic connection.

If you take a look in the R170 forum you will see that the sound system is not one of the favorite features of our cars. Lots of folks have replaced the HU and more of the sound system. You can check there for suggestions. You can also take a look at www.slk32.com.

Who cares about the sound system when you can drive your car with the top down and listen to the engine as you go cruising along.

RE: urghhhh - cd changer/player

Thank you so much for your reply. I will look into the pillow headrest. Regarding the cd changer, it came with the car and yes it does play "regular" cd's. When I try to listen to one of the cd-r discs the display shows NO CD. It isn't recognizing it at all. Maybe I'll try upgrading the cd's I'm burning to better quality? Thank you again!
