RE: instaling rear headrests in 1984 300d

I am very interested in doing the same thing with my '81 300SD turbo. I think that headrests in the back increases how classy these vehicles look by a lot.

I think the first step is to go to a junkyard and to find a car with the same body/same headrests in the back as your current model if it did have headrests.

Basically buy the whole back seat with the rests. You will need the bracket inside the back part of the seat that the headrests slip into. You will have to do surgery and place this bracket into your current seats.

Holes must be made neatly and measured perfectly so it won't look stupid.

You will have to get the rests reappholstered if you can't find the exact same material and color in the ones you take from the junk yard.

Let me know your thoughts as I am eager to do this procedure!

Not sure if this information would apply to you, but on the W201 of the same vintage, there are headrest brackets that can be bolted onto the bulkhead behind the rear seat. The spacing of the metal prongs for the rear headrests are the same width as the front headrests, so in the event that one can't find the rear units, front ones can be modified to fit, just by trimming the length of the prongs. Small cuts have to be made at the top of the rear seat to push the headrests into the brackets.
