Is it such a bad thing?

Hello all. I have posted this on R129 but I just want to get more opinions ...

I went to the dealer to have my oil change after about slightly over 2K miles. I asked my advisor to see how often to change my oil and he told me that after 1998, MB suggested to change oil between 10-12K miles but he would say to do it about half of that (which is 5-6K miles). I have always changed my oil before the 3K miles marks ... Is it such a bad thing to change oil too much? Does it hurt the engine to change oil too much? Mathematically, physically ... I don't it is but I just want to make sure. Thanks all for your comments/suggestions.

RE: Is it such a bad thing?

Most automotive publications agree that the 3,000 oil change (or it's like) is not needed. Simply go by what the owners' manual tells you is the proper oil change interval. Will it hurt the car to change the oil more frequently? No, not at all. But you are using a finite resource unnecessarily and wasting money - yours. Other than that, no real harm is being done; especially if it makes you feel more comfortable with your ride.

RE: Is it such a bad thing?

It al depends on what oil is used.

If dino is used then 3K is best.
If sythetic is used then 5K-6K is fine.

And the only thing that realy would be/get
hurt is your wallet.
Especially taking it to an MB dealer to be
serviced.

Louis.

RE: Is it such a bad thing?

My manual says to change oil from 10-12K miles! And I use mobile one oil (suggested by MB).

I have a friend who changes his Acura oil every 800 miles! He told me it was good for the car.

MB dealer charges me $80+ each time they change the oil so it's not that bad. I drive each car about 5K miles a year so I figured oil changes for every 6 months is spendable [:)]. Besides, I'd rather pay $80+ twice a year (or even 3-4 times) than paying 4-5 figures when something goes wrong.

So maybe I should go to 4K miles intervals then. Thanks for all the comments ... so there is no such bad thing for change oil too often eh? good deal! [^]

RE: Is it such a bad thing?

You friend with the Acura is a bit eccentric! Maybe OCD[:)]

Benz told me 10-12K also and people who know better than I agree that it is ok with synthetics to do that but I can't go that long. I'll go 5k max and change it.

You can't change your oil too often. Even every 800 miles.

RE: Is it such a bad thing?

On the mercedesshop forum some go 8k
with synthetic oil but only after
having the oil analized at 6k to make sure
the additives hadn't broken down to much.

Also I have read some people with newer
MB's had sludge problems.

I for one will change it on 6k(mobil 1)

Louis.

RE: Is it such a bad thing?

I say I change my dino oil every 3000 miles but I don’t. I change my oil once every 3 months/quarter: end of March, end of June, etc. Once I kept track of the mileage: I go about 1000 miles between changes! Although I don’t put a lot of miles on my cars (the reason being I drive two cars) it’s mostly hard, tough stop-n-go driving. To me it’s cheap insurance; I enjoy changing the oil as well. [:)]

RE: Is it such a bad thing?

Change it every 2500-3000, maybe push a couple hundred more miles out of it if needed. Like it's been said, it is cheap insurance.
