300sd turbo fuel problem

After driving for a few miles, I turn my engine off and when I try to restart it, it is like no fuel is getting to the engine. I use the manual pump and it eventually starts. When this happens my alternator light comes on and all of my gauges are dead. After a few seconds I shut down again and immediately restart and everything returns to normal. What is causing this and what do I need to so to fix the problem?

RE: 300sd turbo fuel problem

Just curious, w116 or w126? Not that it really makes any difference, I guess…

How many miles? Maybe dirty fuel filters, air in the fuel system? Algae problem, clogged fuel tank screen?

The alt light could be a bad voltage regulator, loose belt, or bad battery, there could be an electrical problem effecting the glow plugs and/or relay. How long does the glow plug light stay lit?

I’d replace the fuel filters if they have not been changed in the last year.

Let us know.

RE: 300sd turbo fuel problem

It is the w126 and just turned 253,000 mi.. I changed the in-line filter, the transparent one, and the problem with starting has gone away. I put some LUCAS fuel treatment in and it runs much better. The battery and the alternator are both new and the belts are tight. Maybe I will treat it like a sore **** and not screw with it.

RE: 300sd turbo fuel problem

…sounds like a plan…

Perhaps with the clean filter and fuel system the engine will run better and the other problems will not reappear.
