I've got a 2000 c230 Komp sport, about 55k miles. every once in a while the bas/esp light comes on. I thought it had something to do with the breaks, but they are fine. it happens more so when I drive on the highway. if I restart the car, it goes away. what is bas/esp and how do I address it?
This is a problem from the late 90's onwards in many models. If you search for BAS, ESP or ABS in this forum then there are several ways to look at the problem: either it's an untraceable nightmare that causes main dealers to take your car apart over weeks of trying - or it's a simple problem with naff connections on the steering wheel sensor, and a bit of work with WD40, sandpaper and a soldering iron IN THE RIGHT PLACE to improve electrical connections makes it all go away.
I'm getting this at the moment on my new (to me) E55, and I'm thinking about whether to ask for the warranty to kick in (and go through the 'dumb as a rock main dealer' scenario) or put it to my specialist guy, get it properly fixed, and pay for it myself...
Yes, it's a common problem. It has happened to my 01E and my 05M class. In both cases,
a faulty brake switch was the culprit. In practically all the cases I've seen/read about, it's a bad brake sensor. If you're the DIY type, you can probably replace the switch - or just leave the thing like that until you get tired of it.
This is what I've been told by my specialist. I can't resist a quick wiggle under the dash during my afternoon off, but the really good news is, he can do it under warranty too...
(and if we're putting bikes in the signature as well as cars, in the spirit of bling, I should put in:
I have a 2000 S430, and the ESP, BAS and Airmatic malfunction lights are on. The manual says that if the BAS registers a malfunction, then the ESP light will also come on. But why the Airmatic light?
I was told by a dealer that I need to replace the ESP Switch. Any idea how much that will cost for my model.

Could be a lot of things from steering angle sensor to EIS.
Need to pull codes
In my case it was the EIS unit.
Parts and labor ( need to program the keys). was under $800.

After two days and replacing the switch, they said that it is the EIS unit. Part costs 300, and labor. Thing is it took them 448 dollars to get to the problem, now I have to replace this unit.
The codes should have directed them to the EIS, if thats the problem. Like I mentioned in my previous response, mine cost $780 to be exact.
$238.00 for the unit.
$397.00 installation.
$125.00 reprogram keys.
This was done in the San Francisco bay area.
Good luck.
This is crazy, because the Airmatic light came back on when it is supposed to be fixed. The servicepeople say that replacing the EIS will turn out all of the lights, but another Benz mechanic said that EIS has nothing to do with Airmatic.
Im beginning to think that I am either being 1) treated like I will believe anything or 2) they don't really have any expertise in Mercedes like they claim.
I had 4 malfunctions when my EIS was bad:
bas, esp, airmatic, stop light, abs(abs light used to come on but wouldnt read as a malfunction).
All were cleared when the EIS was replaced.
I hope this helps.

If you're getting an airmatic malfunction, I'd have it checked out by the dealer. If your car drops it can damage the struts and that is an expensive repair. My car was seriously lower at all four corners about five years ago, and they told me to drive carefully to the dealer. I didn't get the malfunction but ended up paying about $900 for a new air pump.

I am going to replace the EIS unit and see where it takes me. I hope the air pump is not going bad. Was there any noise or any other sign that the air pump was bad?? Did you have any idea that the car was lower at the corners aside from the smoothness of the ride.

No noise. No warning. I came out one morning and there it was, sitting several inches lower than usual... I dorve it very carefully to a breakfast meeting and then straight to the dealer in K.C.
