newbie needs help with oil consuming 230E!!!!

89 230E (124)/137k kms. Consumes 1 litre of oil per 1000 kms. Exhaust is neither white nor black. Compression test shows number 3 and 4 cylinder very low. Also corresponding spark plugs are oily and fouled after 1500 kms of driving after cleaning. Also engines consumes about a litre of water every 1000 kms. Pressure testing shows no apparent leaks in system.

Have read on this site that valve stem seals were a problem on early w124s and that these can be replaced without head removal using compressed air to hold engine bits in place during procedure.

However, my local MB guy here in Thailand wants to take apart the head to check valve guides, etc.

However, he suspects worn or sticking rings.

He says, worst case scenario here is an engine rebuild including timing chain etc for about baht 30,000. Which is about $800 or so U.S.?

Any thoughts out there from what appears to be a very knowledgeable group of contributors?

Cheers

With out being able to see your car or engine I would say you’ve got your answer: the oil consumption and oil on the plugs is a strong indicator of worn rings.

More than likely it needs rings and maybe a head gasket...
