Need Help with Custom Convertible

I have a 1984 500 SEC with a custom convertible top done by Strayman. I purchased the vehicle with the custom top. I believe Strayman went out of business because I have not been able to locate them. There were formerly of Long Beach California.

Anyway I live in Arizona. The mechanism for the top has a bent arm and a broken connection. I've tried a bunch of different shops but most of them won't touch a custom top. I took it to one shop and they had the car a month. Returned it to me with a big bill and got grease all over my (new) headliner and put a hole in the leather. They put a new bolt on the broken connector but with the bent arm the top would only close under pressure. (they of course did not mention that to me) It blew open on the way home and was impossible to close again. They must have had 5 guys push that thing down to get it closed.

Anyway the car which I purchased to have fun with, has been wasting away in my garage. Can anyone recommend a shop that could do the kind of custom work necessary? Would be great if they were in Arizona but I'd go out of state if necessary.

TIA, Paul

I would try Newport Convertible Engineering, Inc. at www.newportconvertible.com. 714 632-3287

They do high end convertible conversions, and it's possible they can help you out.

post your question in the 126 forum. there are several members there that have converible SECs. Richard Straman was one of the biggest conversion companies worldwide and one of the most sought after for conversions. he is well known for his ferrari converibles

RE: Need Help with Custom Convertible

Thanks for the replies. I see I had the spelling wrong for "Straman" Now I've found a bunch of stuff online about Straman but still haven't found any contact info for them. Did they go out of business? From what I've been reading it sounds like at one point at least they were the best. I found one 1985 SEC convertible done by Straman sold for $125,000. Would be nice to find out more especially if this is adding (considerable) value to my vehicle.
