I know nothing about Mercedes! Help me!

Hi, all!

I've recently had to sell my previous car (Y2K Chevy Corvette) due to a house move, and now I've decided to buy an older (circa '95) Mercedes Benz to "pimp up" a little (hence the name).

What I plan to do is to have the car smoothed a lot, remove door handles, fit big rims and air-bag suspension, black out the windows, re-trim the interior and add some high quality ice.

Based on this, I'm looking to buy a cheaper car, something like an E220 or similar, but a majority of the ones I've seen have star-ship milage (100,000 and over). Is this likely to cause a problem for Benz's with full service history?

What should I look for when buying these cars? Are they prone to rust and if so, where are the worst areas?

Also, I really like the E-Class 230 CE Pilarless coupe - what are they like?

Thanks in advance for any help in my efforts!

Col.

RE: I know nothing about Mercedes! Help me!

Yes, that is "starship" mileage...for a domestic

These are Mercedes-Benzs.

Don't be afraid to get one of those, because that's low in the grand scheme of things.

Yes, that’s low mileage for an MB.

However, in light of your plans for the car, I believe a Lexus would suit you better.

RE: I know nothing about Mercedes! Help me!

Hehehe! I thought my post might get that kind of response.

Point being that I wanted to do something a little more tasteful. This car won't be like a lexus (lexus tail lights etc), and everything I do to it will be the best I can get.

For example - I don't plan to put spinners or junk like that on this car - I'm going for 20" Chrome AMG Alloys (replicas, of course) - the wheels that are now being sold as "OZ Operas".

What I want to create is an incredibly slick looking car - smooth and classy, not leary and "riced up" (no spoilers here, guv!)

Hope you guys are cool with this! I'm not coming to aggrovate your cars, I'm coming to try to be part of the family! :)

I wish there were more ppl like you. For everyone who says you should buy a Lexus what is wrong with modifying the odd merc. For every modded one there has to be 10 that are stock. It's not like your ricing a Gullwing!

If I where you I'd mod the 230CE, you can't beet the pillarless look, my suggestion is to convert the doors say that open upwards, would look wicked. Otherwise an early '90's 126 300SE is good for modding.

RE: I know nothing about Mercedes! Help me!

Thanks, Solicit! :)

The car I'm buying is a 1991 320 pillarless coupe. The mods I'm planning are as follows:

20" Chrome Avantgard (sp?) wheels,
Hydraulic, fully independant suspension
Suicide doors
TV, CD and DVD player
Tinted Windows
Smoothed, colour coded body (all will be black - no two tone)
Solenoid doors
No badges except central grille MB Badge
Mirrorcators from later model
Chromed engine bay with colour coded hoses and wiring

I am interested in fitting Halogen lights and a subtle, strong looking bodykit too.

Are there any sites where I can find out more information about this car? I wanna know everything!

Thanks in advance for any help!

Col.

RE: I know nothing about Mercedes! Help me!

Those mods sound good. The only one I wouldn't do is the central grille MB Badge. I assume you mean the one if with the huge star in the middle of the standard grill. I would convert it to the later smooth front grill that came on these cars from '92
on I think. From what I've heard its a simple job. Sorry don't know of any websites.

RE: I know nothing about Mercedes! Help me!

Nice idea - I'll take a look into that.

Doesn't seem to be the case that this forum gets many hits, unfortunately - are there any forums that are more active? Preferably UK based?

Anyone know any sites that sell Bodykits in the UK?

Thanks!

I still think you’d be happier with a Lexus…
