1982 560 SEL??

[?]Does anybody have a ballpark figure on the value of a 1982 560 SEL. This car is in good condition for it age has 160,000 miles. No rust. Has been a Texas car since new. The $1700 price on the car is tempting but do not have enough knowledge on these to know if I am getting into money pit or a gold mine??? The car is very attractive hard to tell it is from 1982. Any feed back very much appreciated, Thanks.

The 5.6 L engine was not available in the w126 S class until 1985. Are you sure you have the right year/model?

A 1982 S class would have to be a 380, right?

$1700 appears to be a good price for a 560SEL. However, 560SEL's were not made in 1982.
Although the price appears to be appealing, remember that these cars are expensive to maintain/service. It's possible that you are going to spend $1700 many times over a few years of ownership. Engine, transmission and AC are biggies. Get the car professionably inspected.

RE: 1982 560 SEL??

Are the lower side skirts rippled or smooth? If their rippled it means its an earlier version and is either a 380 or 500 assuming its a V8 and would have been built before '86. If there smooth it could be a 420 or 560 from '86 on. That is assuming it has not been modified.

I would not buy a V8 simply because of the cost to fix. have a look at good 280 or 300's. They have the straight 6 engines in them. My 280 has been reasonably cheap to maintain. I don;t go to authorised repairers and only fix what is necessary. At the moment the dash, aircon and transmition don't work and the suspension needs to be rebuilt. But it still drives, I'm planning on fixing them once I graduate.

The only major expense was paying about AU$5000 to get a friend to rebuild the engine. I would have cost alot more for a mb mechanic to do it. Thats about US$3000. Have a look at the 126 forum.
