Opened the hood to check the oil today and my battery must be oozing acid in my '99 ML. This is a less than one year old (8/03) MBZ dealer replaced battery. It has eaten into the battery case and inside fender panel pretty bad. I'll take it in next week. What causes a fairly new battery to do this? I haven't been doing any off-roading so I don't understand what happened all of a sudden.[?]
Batteries are like tires--a blind purchase item--some last forever and for some, forever is less tha one year. Get to the selling shop straight away and have it taken care of before you have addition problems.
Be certain that the battery hold-down clamps are not too tight. The battery case will expand and contract during usage, so if the clamp is too tight, then the case will be stressed and could crack. Tighten the clamp no more than snug.
Also, do not over-stress the terminals. Use a puller to remove the cables and go easy when installing.
For the spill, don't forget to neutralize the acid with baking soda. Fresh paint would not hurt on the sheet metal.
It was a dead cell in the battery. MBZ replaced the battery and my dealer service is "talking with" MBZ to see if they'll pay to repair the damage.
