Help with 1981 300SD

Hey all, im new to the forums, and new to owning mercedes. My friend and i have a n 81 300SD . It runs alright and everything as far as i know ... but unfortunately i dont know anything about cars. Lately the car has been over heating really fast really badly. I know we re losing water from the bottom of the radiator but i cant tell where from. We checked the fluid pumps going from the radioator to the engine and the resivouir to the radiator, but i cant tell what the problem is. we got a new oil cap because the old one didn't fit right and spilled oil over the engine, i thought the oil might of been heating the engine and causing it to stay warm but the car still over heats. Does anyone have any suggestions or tips on how i could tackle this problem ? Help is greatly appreciated ... p.s. love the smileys on this board [8]

RE: Help with 1981 300SD

Hi.

One thing you can check is the weep hole
on the bottom of the water pump.
If coolant is leaking out of it then the
water pump is bad.

Also check the coolant level in the engine,
not the reservoir.
You'll have to remove one side of the
upper radiator hose and fill it until
the coolant/water comes out.
Be carefull when you remove the hose on
the radiator side, the top is plastic and
can break.

If the engine still over heats after you
fill it then the radiator will need to be
replaced.
If you do replace it use MB coolant or Zerex-05
follow instructions on the coolant container.
