RE: 1989 300CE coupe
If it makes you feel any better, I just bought a 93 300E 3.2l with 114,000 on the ticker. Paid $6,700 and the car is in immaculate visual condition both interior and exterior. The Carfax shows one owner with no negatives at all showing.
Now for the fun stuff, after 4 days of ownership, the #2 band in the tranny snapped. No sense in simply replacing the band when the additional parts for the rebuild were only about $500.00. Well, once the tranny came out, the real seal is also failing and one of the motor mounts is shot. Bottom line, it looks like the total is going to be about $3,800.00 in repairs from a well respected indy.
Yes, I'm biting the bullet and having all the work done since, as I see it, I'd rather spend the $3,800.00 on a car that's worth $8,450.00 (according to what my bank was willing to finance) than putting about $4,000.00 into my wife's old Saturn that when repaired would only be worth $1,600.00.
You may feel betrayed now but once you put the car back into the shape you know it should be in, you'll have that pride in ownership and the knowledge that with the proper maintainance, your car will probably outlast you.
It's a good investment, fix the car as long as you have the means to do so.
