Front license plate requirement in California

What is the penalty for not using the front license plate in California? One dealership told me that it used to be a "fix-it" warning but now the penalty is a $200 or $250 fine. They also said that the only way to use the front plate on the S class is to drill holes on the bumper. Is this correct? I wonder what percentage of S class owners don't use the front plates.

RE: Front license plate requirement in California

My SLK230 was delivered to me with the front bracket in the trunk because the dealer has realized a lot of owners don't want the front plate mounted.

Every new car I have purchased since 1977 except a Honda has been German and none of them have ever had a front plate mounted.

The only times I have been hassled for that has been driving my kid around in his wheelchair lift equipped VW van. Trying to get into some handicapped parking areas without a front plate showing the handicapped status of the vehicle gets a lot of people upset because if you have the plate you don't have the handicapped hang tag to display on your rear view mirror and no front plate either so most people here who don't even know about handicapped plates being an option and don't look for them think I am encroaching on their spaces and get agitated enough to do really stupid things.

Having said that however my new SLK with no front plate worries me because it has already shown an amazing ability to attract the attention of cops from quite a distance.

They usually back off as soon as they see how much gray hair is on my head but it reminds me of how I used to get followed around all the time by cops when I was in my late 20's and had a Porsche as my daily driver.

Potato Chip, custom canuter valve, low-friction muffler bearings, synthetic turn signal fluid, Hi-Definition Progressive Scan Wiper Blades.
Law-makers are supposed to regulate in the interest of the public as opposed to regulating in the interest of the regulated party.
If it says Pratt and Whitney on the outside it better say Martin Baker on the inside.

Watch for the PC-Police!

Now that they have devised those camera traffic lights, and since they are hungry for the money from law-breakers, you can bet on seeing them much busier than before enforcing the front plate law very soon...

Morality: if you are going through a red light, make sure that the switch for your DC-powered, cobalt-magneted 6000RPM rotating front plate is ON.
