jdc: Older, high mileage cars to me are a risk. If an engine, trans, suspension go south or all 3 need major repair.......well, I would guess that it would cost more that what I paid. One good thing is that, at least one can get service and parts manuals for these older cars!!!!
I can respect that.

Besides, those of us who buy the older cars (for the most part) are looking at resorting them. The older cars are much easier to work on. We keep them well maintained so we don’t have major component problems and parts are still very easy to find and cheap – we also love the way they look![:D][;)]

jdc: If my hobby was MBs, instead of Ferraris, I would do EXACTLY what you are doing.

I hope to read one day, that you have reached the 1,000,000 mile mark!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck!

RE: Can't believe you paid so much for a new MB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An engine or tranny can go just as soon on a car with 50k as a car with 150k, if the car hasn't been taken care of, or is damaged, or has a flaw, it'll go, regardless of mileage.

When I was looking for a car, as someone on the of so wonderful limited budget of a college student, I bought a car that has a solid platform to run for another 6-8 years, but not have too much initial cost. I purchased my 1993 300E for 10,000USD with 90k miles on the car. Since purchasing it, I have spent 3000USD in replacing what I feel needs to get replaced to endure another 6-8years, or 100k miles.

I figured, I'll end up spending another 2-3 thousand in repairs, before the car gets to point of just needing regular maintenance like a new car.

I feel it was a solid investment, but like all cars, you will just spend money on them and never see much in the way of compensation for the amount spent.

But if you really want to talk about depreciation, buy a Cadillac. I have a friend who is obessed with them, every Caddie he buys has about 20k miles on the clock. And they all have dropped about 30-40% in price since it rolled off the lot.

As the old saying goes. The miles that depreciate your car the fastest are the ones you cover when you drive it home from the dealer for the first time.
