RE: Down With Mercedes-Benz
I think that as the newer cars age, they will be appreciated far more, when
compared to other cars of their period.
Heck, I knew of a few "oldtimer" benz mechanics who thought the 123's were total
crap, in comparison to the previous 108 and even 115 cars. (And don't even get them
started on the 201.) Less wood, more plastic, crap gauges, blah/etc. Although the 123
was obviously improved in many areas, some things had to be sacrificed for the sake of cost,
practicality and safety.
Basically what I'm saying is it's all about "perspective"...does a 201 suck compared to an
old 600?? Probably...does that mean all 201's are bad cars? No, they're actually pretty cool,
especially when held against other cars of their era. As far as newer cars, the sad fact is that
there is likely no way MB could build one using the same level of aesthetic refinement and
overall polish as one from the 50's/60's/70's, and 'not' have it cost a million dollars...however,
things in other departments are far improved well beyond any of those old cars, so it's an acceptable
trade-off (IMO, of course).
Personally?? The last MB I thought "kicked ass" right from day one was the 124...a perfect blend of looks,
performance and practicality. Newer designs seem to be "trying too hard" in certain respects, the tail
end of the 210 is something I myself find hideous and bloated. I did however drive an SLK the other day,
which I thought was very impressive...reminded me a little of the old 190 SL...(motors wore quickly in those
too, but at least the SLK has some power to show for it).
