'Smart' glass is frameless, tints itself

It's used on concepts and production cars such as PT Cruiser

By Anita Lienert / The Detroit News

Automotive glass is getting “smarter, thanks to companies such as DaimlerChrysler AG.

The Mercedes-Benz Vision GST concept, a six-seater that looks like a futuristic station wagon, has a panoramic glass roof with an unusual feature. Occupants can press a button in the cabin to vary the degree of tinting on the roof, depending on the intensity of the sunlight. That’s an excellent idea that ought to make the manual shades on most sunroofs obsolete.

Of course, concept cars are dream cars. But some “smart glass also is showing up on production vehicles.

The 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser convertible uses a smart glass system that is a variation of the one used on more ...

Doesn't seem to new to me.

My father had self dimming prescription
glasses for the longest time.
The more sun the darker they became.
Sounds like the same technology to me.

Not the same technology. I want to say they're using led's but I'm not sure. They don't react to sunlight but instead react to voltage. They can make the glass opaque or any shade in between.

Look at the bright side. With the current state of Mercedes quality control, not only will you have a sunroof that refuses to open, it will also not allow sun in.

maybe it's this...
looks like when power is applied the glass becomes 100% clear... sweet looking stuff

Electronic Smart Glasses
A smart glass is intended to have the ability to control the amount of light, and heat, passing through. With the turn of a button, the glass can change from transparent to completely opaque. Unlike blinds, smart windows are capable of partially blocking light while maintaining a clear view of what lies behind the window.

That technology is called called "Electrochromatic glass". Voltage is applied to a glass with a thin titanium dioxide layer. The current generated darkens it.
