Impressions on the W140

I am just wondering what everyone thinks of the W140 S-Class in regards to style, quality, reliability, ect... Im just trying to get a more general reaction. In case you are wondering, it was the one built from 1992-1999. Thanks

RE: Impressions on the W140

Very nice car. Very safe, strong, smooth. Get a mid to late 90's model. Most of the problems were worked out by then.

The only things you need to watch for are:
A/C Evaporator leaks
Lower Control Arm Bushings torn
ADS(hydraulic suspension) struts worn/leaking
Steering box leaks
head gasket leaks (6 cyl)
Engine harness problems

Those are most of the major things found to go wrong that cost a considerable amount of money. Don't let that stuff scare you away though. The W140 is a great car.

RE: Impressions on the W140

Style: I believe it has a presence that will live through generations.

Quality: Beyond reproach. The 600 series were hand built. About 1,000 were built in 1993.

Reliability: How a 140 has been cared for and preventatively maintained is critical to its reliability. Superb care will result in superb ownership enjoyment. The innate glitches in this chassis in my experience has been: rear suspension accumulators (100k + miles), dash console with regard to odometer function (100k + miles) and wiring harness (60k miles). If you read others' experiences you will consistently hear of a bad A/C evaporator---to date (118k miles), my W-140 hasn't had this problem.

Ownership Experience: [:)][8D]

Note: This is not a car for the faint of pocketbook. At the same time, service and repairs, if handled with common sense via competent and honest technicians, will not severely hurt your hip pocket.
