ML sun/moon roof explosion

Purchased my ML350 about 6 weeks ago. Yesterday, as driving at 55mph along a state highway in pouring rain, the sun/moon roof suddenly exploded. There were no foreign objects, no explanation. The shade was open and my wife and I were covered with glass, along with the rain. Has anyone else had this experience? Will take to dealer tomorrow, but I don't think they'll ever get all the glass pieces cleaned out. Appreciate any comments. [?]

Did you accidentally press the eject button? More cars, more gadgets, more problems. I'd talk to the dealer right away, sounds like they'll have alot of work to do in order to get the glass completely out.

RE: ML sun/moon roof explosion

It can happen, all glass in automobiles are tempered and are designed to shatter like that. It might have been a small chip or a flaw when it was made, sometimes temperature can do it. I've had a rear window shatter for no apparent reason in one of my cars before. Its not an MB exclusive thing. It can happen to any car.

it was probably tension or a small crack that cost sunroof to shatter. a rock chip might be the reason.

RE: ML sun/moon roof explosion

Have had a similar experience with a GM vehicle many years ago. The car was sitting in a parking lot. The moon roof was open to vent the car. The temp was in the mid 70's. It was just a spontaneous explosion. Best as we could ever tell something caused stress, the the glass gave in to the stress. I was lucky enough not to be in the car at the time. Like in my situation, you'll never be able to tell if there was manufacturing/installation defect or impact or something. At 55 mph in heavy rain (which is actually a lot of force), you might have been hit by something and never known.

Hope you and your wife are ok.

RE: ML sun/moon roof explosion

There was an article on a British consumer TV show about this kind of problem during last year; apparently there's a tendency for this to happen on Smart cars (which as we know ar MB 'group' at least. On the Smarts it's the rear window, which is a structural part of the tailgate and is therefore opened, closed, slammed, whatever: nonetheless, it would always be while the tailgate is closed and people are minding their own business.

The programme claimed that this was a 'bad glass batch' problem and that MBUK (aka Smart) were putting together a recall/replace operation.
