you are NEVER obligated to service your vehicle at the same dealer you bought it from.
your problem is a factory defect that will be paid for by Mercedes-Benz Corporate through an authorized dealership. try another dealer until you find one that is competent in finding and fixing the problem. some dealerships are corporate, some are francise, all operate a little differently.
i shopped around and the dealership i go to now gives loaner cars, installs parts I bring in, etc. don't put up with incompetent service.
your gut feeling is right, their solution is wrong.
