Problem with 500 SEL doors. Please help!!

My dad just bought a '92 MB 500SEL. When he got it, everything was working fine. Now, there is a problem. It used to suck the doors tight for you when you closed them, but now it stopped doing that. I have no idea where to look to solve the problem. Even worse I have no idea what that system is called so I can't even do a search on it. Please help a newbie out.

RE: Problem with 500 SEL doors. Please help!!

As a newbie myself my i suggest you look under the W140 forums for advice!
It seems this is a common fault on these models (mines a 600 SEL), and mine does the same.
Take out number 9 fuse from the fuse box in the boot, count to ten the replace. Apparently this resets the vacuum pump. Worked for me, although i may have to do this several times a week. Of this persists it means the vacuum pump is on its way out, big bucks for a new one.

Search under "closing assist", fuse pull is usually temporary, "fix" is new pump! MY 500 SEL on second, but dealer paid for it. This is one of the major problems, along with AC evaporator, and Bose amp.
