RE: why MB uses SOHC???

My 1993 300E uses D0HC. I couldn't really tell you why. I mean, you could also ask why is the Corvette a pushrod? It's all about the application in which the engine is going I think. Oh and cost too, don't ever forget about the money factor.

RE: why MB uses SOHC???

You got it right, Tubs, money, the newer engines are crap. You see, they make good quality cars and engines for a while, (eg, W140 S600) then the costomers complain about high prices, so they lose quality(W220) and the price goes down again. Then, they complain about quality, and the cycle repeats. The new V6 that they only just released is showing a climb in quality again, so thats good.

RE: why MB uses SOHC???

SOHC gives you better low-end response and torque. the MB is 3-valve btw, not 2-valve. it is a very efficient system. DOHC is only neccessary on a small-displacement motor. notice how honda's V6(excluding the NSX) uses SOHC. it wouldn't give MB that much more power to have DOHC when they have the 3-valve system. a MB is about torque and pulling power, not about high-revs and no torque(like my integra and old Type-R(RIP[V])).

plus, less rotating mass helps make the motor more compact and lighter.

RE: why MB uses SOHC???

MB switched to SOHC because of the low end torque and better emmission of the 3 valve twin spark V engine design. But MB is also transitioning to a brand new direct inject DOHC 4 valve engine starting with the SLK350. They will eventually replace all their V's with this congfiguration because they make V6 and V8s on the same line. It should get better gas milage and even better emmissions because of the direct inject is very percise.

RE: why MB uses SOHC???

As stated previously MB uses a SOHC 3 valve design to accommodate twin sparkplugs with a potential more efficient burning and hence better fuel economy and less exhausts. Problem is however that the limited valve area makes it more difficult to achieve high power-to-displacement ratios, and the next generation engines will use 4 valves per cylinder and higher output power.

In addition to economics, GM uses pushrod engines to accommodate itself to the American style of driving. With no Autobahns or Autostradas permitting drivers to reach the upper limits of their engine's capabilities, GM gears itself to off-the-line acceleration.

The so-called stop light race. Believe it or not, for this type of driving, a pushrod engine excels over more modern DOHC and SOHC applications. Of course, one might be at a disadvantage when going up against a modern engine where you can do a long distance haul.

RE: why MB uses SOHC???

Before anybody assumes DOHC and 4 valves per cylinder is somehow "New technology," remember that the first engines that used it were built around 1911 or 1912. Harley Davidson racing motorcycles were DOHC 4-valve design before the First World War.

MB is releasing a new family of engines over the next couple of model years. They are all going to be DOHC.
