That's because the Corvette weighs almost nothing, certainly by comparison with most Mercs. It's not strictly true to say that cam configuration is the main determinant of power delivery; power up high or down low also has a lot to do with the length of the piston stroke and hence the configuration of the cylinders. Long-stroke high-compression engines give good low torque but tend to fly apart at high revs; short stroke engines with dinnerplate pistons can spin like crazy, but can't put down lots of power at idle....
