Long term storage checklist step by step
After visiting many forums, including this one, and getting little and also poor info from dealers, a Merc Roadside assistance mechanic gave me invaluable and solid advice for laying up my vehicles - SL and ML - for up to a year. I did so last year for 8 and had no problems starting and driving immediately. Her are the steps I followed in order:
Service – oil & filter change
Wash and wax car if you are a car nut like me!
Let dry overnight.
Add Stabil fuel conditioner to full tank of fuel.
Inflate tires up to 48psi cold.
Drive/run vehicle with AC OFF and fan on high with all vents open for 5-10 mins (dries out AC moisture in pan and stops mildew smell). Also this circulates the Stabil conditioned fuel.
Spray disc brakes lightly with F1 wax or equiv. Wipe off when dry. Only necessary to do this in high humidity region to stop disc rust).
Drive onto 4, at least 4inch high, 18x18in squares of styrofoam, to stop flat-spot. (Forget the overpriced so-called molded plastic ones - they are too thin on floor.)
Do not engage handbrake.
Disconnect battery/ies completely.
Manually lock all doors/trunk.
Cover vehicle with clean sheet, then cover with good quality breathing car cover. (I use Merc ones as they are a perfect fit and water repellent).
Connect main battery first, then starter battery in SL, Start car and run at 1500 (max) rpm until warm.
You MUST turn steering-wheel full right and full left to reset turn lights/ signals and sensors.
If windows and roof do not reset properly open fully then close and hold switch in full close position until a click is heard.
Bingo - ready to go.
I hope this helps. Worked for me many times!
