RE: Mercedes Loyalty
BMW isn't losing customers to their styling, many people have grown to love is and some praise it as the most beautiful cars ever. Chris Bangle and his design team need a break, they needed to take the aged BMW look and refresh is while still keeping key icons that make it a BMW and usher the company into a new millenium of buyers.
Why is ruining BMW is their stupidity in engineering the highest selling cars. Like the new 7-series. That car violates one of my main commandments of automobiles "Thou shalt not have more gadgets than horsepower." The I-drive, worst idea ever. The Park helper, another horrible idea. The ultra senstive self closing doors. The worlds ugliest seats. And on top of it, the worst shifter since the 3 on the Tree.
Thank fully, the 5-series that is showing up everywhere now, is not as doomed. It has a shifter in between the the dash and the center console, where God intended it to be, the i-drive is present, but so are dash loacated climate controls, with auto setting. So the only thing I-drive does is control the Navi, the entertainment, and doo dads. I suspect many people will start their 5 Bimmers and just pop it to the Radio or CD menu for the i-Drive and leave is so their don't have an coranary trying to change stations.
None the less, what loyalty they have is kept by smooth power plants, and magical suspensions. Though, my buddy's family just picked up a new 745i and in my opinion, the V-8 sounds like the old 740i engine with a cold. Though the 325hp is welcome.
Personally, I am not very biased either way, but if it was a midsize sedan I was looking for, I'd go BMW, the new 5 is something special, mainly the 545i or the new V-10 M5 expected to be debuted in 2004. But if it's big body luxury you want, there is only one comapny right now. Mercedes-Benz, the new S-class, CL, and SL cars are perfection, and the C class is selling like hot cakes.
Just my thoughts.
And I forgot, the new 5 has a first too that unlike many of the first in the 7 with is a nice touch, Adaptive steering. So that at 2mph 15degrees of steering wheels turn does nothing. But at 102mph, 15 degrees of steering wheel travel just made you cut across mutiple lanes. I think once the driver is accustomed to it, they will welcome the short wheel travel to quick snaps and tosses in spirited back roads driving.
