Dashboard cracks

I have a '99 E300 TD. About a year ago, I noticed small cracks along the foremost part of the dashboard, by the defrost vents. Then it started to crack around the passenger-side airbag outline. Now there are serious cracks in several other edge locations. This is a car that has always been garaged. I work out of my home, so it doesn't even sit in an office parking lot during the day. The vinyl is "armor-alled" at least once a month.

My service tech says, "Yeah, that's not uncommon with the late 90's E models." MB won't do anything about it, since the vehicle is out of warranty. Is anyone else seeing this on their car?

RE: Dashboard cracks

Apparently this has been a problem for Mercedes for quite some time. I looked at several vehicles when I bought my 201 and a good number had cracked dashes. At a tech session with MBCA we went to an upholstery shop and the owner said never use Armour All on anything. He said the best way to treat the dash to prevent cracks is to keep it covered (Dashmat or similar products) and to frequently apply Lemon Pledge. As for finding a new dash I don't know and I wish you luck.
