Parking Brake

Hi, Is there any reason to use the parking brake? I live in a flat city and usually just put the car in 'Park' when I stop.

I know that in the days of drum brakes, some designs used the parking brake to adjust the callipers.

My previous car often had to have the pb serviced or adjusted and I always wondered if this was because I never used it.

Apologies to anyone who read this question already on mbw0rld while it was briefly up (they need some new technology (or technicians)).

RE: Parking Brake

The only real purpose I can think of is to use it as an emergency brake if your nornmal hydraulic brakes fail. Other than that it's pretty pointless.

RE: Parking Brake

The parking brake is used to hold the car when parked on hills.

You should put it on while still holding the brake after shifting into park.

If you do not set it before you take your foot off of the brake the trans gears bind and you get a thunk when shifting from park to drive.

It is also used to spin the car in a 180 to go back the other way when being chased.[:D]

It doesnt do much on flat ground other than make it harder to tow because they have to put dollys under the rear wheels to move it.

RE: Parking Brake

The reason that you use your parking brake is to prevent damage to the transmission. If someone ran into the rear bumper of a parked car to force of the impact would be transfered to the transmission. Plus the parking brake is the only sure way to guarantee that the vehicle will not move.

RE: Parking Brake

There are also no hills where I live but I use the parking break because I don’t like the way the car rocks when I put by big, fat body in the car![:I]
