RE: VIN Tracking
I have just been through this myself.
I am assuming you are after the Data Card with all the information for your car when it left the factory ... colour code, trim code, options (standard and additional) etc.
I recommend calling in to your local MB agent and give them the VIN number - they can usually enter this info their computer and print out from the Daimler-Chrysler database (I say usually because MB split the world into regions - if your car was sold new in another region it may take a week or two to get the information).
It is worth the effort a) because it is a very interesting exercise and b) each car is uniquely recorded - in the event of needing some wierd or wonderful spareparts they can be cross-referenced and confirmed via the VIN and codes.
The following will take you to an excellent site that details most of the codes (take the Mercedes-Benz new and used cars and parts link)
Good luck - I found from the info I received that my car originally had code 226 option - rear foot rests! how useful.
