I have a question. I have a 91 300TE-24 that is a euro car, not north american. It has the AMG body kit, AMG steering wheel, is lowered, has an AMG decal on the air cleaner, is badged AMG on the rear, but other than that, no other markings of special AMG information on the car. It has Lorinser D93 rims, not AMG rims. According to the linesheet on an online VIN decoder when I bought the car, it said it was a 300TE-24. I have recently been having head gasket troubles with the 104.980 engine, so I printed off the linesheet again from the same VIN decoder. This time (one year later), it said my car is a 300 TE-24,AMG 300 TE 3.4. The online vin decoder that I used can be found at Mercedes-Benz Club Russia | Mercedes-Benz / VIN
I told my mechanic this and his mouth dropped a bit, as did mine. I don't know if it is a true AMG, but before he does the head gasket on the engine, he wants to be sure of what he is opening up. Is it a 3.4 or the 3.0 DOHC 104.980? My VIN is WDB1240911F162464. It says my chassis # is a 124.091 which I read somewhere on a forum that this is an AMG car.
Please help out if you can. I will be pleased if this is a true AMG car, but my mechanic will pull his hair out as the parts will likely have to come from Germany.
1) Cars made by AMG before MB (pre 1999, very few of them around)
2) Cars made by AMG after MB, (1999 to now)
3) Cars with AMG after market parts(body kits, badges, etc.), installed by owners or independent shops.
Seems like most inquries on this Forum re AMG validation fall in the third category.
Yeah, how would you know if the W124 you're looking at is an amg apart from the bodykit, wheels and usual badges? Anything else that can be seen to verify? I'm looking at two in my location that claim to be amg cars. Both have the kits and the wheels. One is a 300E the other an E420?!

Quite a few Mercedes have the option for AMG wheels and bodykit, but under current standards, it's not an AMG model. Pre-merger, in the US, if you had two AMG tuning kits installed, then the car qualified for the old AMG badge.
