AMG M117 twin cam heads and reliability

Does anybody have any information about the reliabiity of the old 80s twin cam 4 valve heads (4 cams, 32 valves total) ? These were used in the 5.6 and 6 liter engines like the one put into the Hammer. I've heard they are great motors, but other have said the sand-cast heads are too porous and they always leak, and are a maintenance nightmare with no parts availability and huge repair costs. Anyone have any information, please?

Search the w126 forum - those heads are prone to leaking, and you can find out why if you search.

Oil leaks on the M117 AMG 32-valve heads

I had a 560 SEC with the 6.0 litre 32-valve engine and have to confirm this. Sadly. The heads were constantly leaking oil and not even AMG in Affalterbach were able to stop it.

Oil consumption (loss) was about half a litre on 1000km (600mls). I had the car registered in Switzerland and was constantly battling with their very strict regulations because of the oil leaks.

We even took it back to AMG where they removed the engine to try and stop the leaks on the back side of the engine, but even that was a short lived fix (although an extremely expensive one).

But besides this the engine worked very well and never let me down in any way.

So if you can live with the oil leaks then these are great engines.

Having moved to Dubai in the meantime (where nobody cares about oil leaks) I am looking for one of these 6.0/32v engines again (with or without a body attached to it).

they are prone to leaking, but they can be sorted...b/w coatings and modern gaskets/improvements they can be made to be very reliable.

Also, if you need parts we are able to have them made or are making them already.

Maintaining the heads is involved, ie when it comes time to adjust the valves the time sheet gives 8 hours which is it goes Smoothly is reasonable.

We have 3 32v equipped AMG's in the shop right now...and IMHO these engines are spectacular despite their faults. Driving a 6L 32V makes everything else feel on the tame side!

I enjoy taking mine out for a run:

I just came across an original AMG manual for placing such engine (M117 4V). It's 77 pages. It's in German, but has lots of helpful pictures. If anyone is interested in a copy, I can send you a .pdf of it.
