I noticed while searching through classifieds that various AMG 55 models seem to go down even lower than their 430/500 models?
For example, a clean SL55 is barely more than a clean SL500, not in all cases but in most not even near what the difference when new. Same goes for the CLK 55 vs 430, E55 vs. 500/430 and so on..
I understand that maintenance and overall costs is higher , but just curious. Like why not fork out an extra $5-10k to get the AMG model that has so much more to offer?
Like you said, because of maintenance costs. I would also add that the "average Joe" or "average Joanne" would look at an AMG and say "That's more car than I really need or can handle". And if that's the case, then I'm glad they're not buying them.

I just bought an extended warranty for my 2005 E55 and I can't tell you how happy I am to know I am covered to 100,000 miles. I certainly plan on driving it to that point and don't care about depreciation - I'm in my dream car!

I have to say that I noticed that too and took full advantage of the situation when I purchased my 2002 ML55 AMG with 88,000 miles for $19995 in September 2007! - I have since only had problems with my Power Steering O-ring & Reservoir and Driver's Side Engine Mount which I changed at the grand cost of $4 for the o-ring, $38 for the power steering reservoir and $49 for the engine mount - So it turned out to be a real bargain!
I did think it was a bit cheap for an AMG badged SUV, which just 4-5 years ago retailed at $67,000 but that thought soon evaporated as I stepped on the accelerator and hit the freeway! (LOL)
Speaking from experience, you will lose a great deal if you are continuously changing cars. My CLK55, E55 and CL600 were huge losses when it came to selling them or trading them in; But i felt it was worth it. Truly amazing cars. Currently looking for a S63. Would always buy an AMG model.
