I am investigating a 1000SEL from AMG. It has the AMG badge on the door jam. Any suggestions on what I should look for in the engine compartment to see if this is an AMG engine rather than just a body and interior job? What should I look for and where would it be?
Only way to tell with any Real certainty would be to have paperwork attesting to the work done on the car Or there being visible AMG mods, ie headers/exhaust. I'd bring a 10mm deep w/ a small extension on a 1/4' ratchet and a small mirror, remove the pass. side valve cover and inspect the back of the cam for AMG stampings.
Some had badging, some did not. Both my AMG 6L 32V's (126 & 124) do not have any badging in the engine room/door jams etc..
Most 1000SELs were created with a badge that could be bought at any Parts Aftermarket store in the 80s. In the late 80s, we'd hang out at a place called Pro-AM and they had 1000SEL badges in chrome and gold; they sold quite a few of them.

FYI I am still on this. This car came from the Geneva car show. I am waiting on the paperwork which I should see shortly. It might be real. I have my fingers crossed
