Hey, I joined this forum hoping someone can shed some light on my situation. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have the opporunity to buy a 1987 AMG 190e with the 6.0 liter I belive is from a same year 560 series for $8500. The catch is that I would be buying it from a mechanic who refuses to fix what is wrong with it, which he says is a leaking head gasket. I know a faulty head gasket can lead to many other problems so I was wondering how much time and money it would cost to fix it all up myself, and if it is worth the money. Ive been looking for a project car for a while now and this seems like one I would have a proud product when I finished. Also, if all goes bad, how much (estimate) how much I would have to pay a shop to fix it up. The car has 28k miles on it and is in very good cosmetic condition, although it has sat in storage for most of its life.
Once again thanks for any help anyone can offer, I really appreciate it.
Jim

1) I didn't know you could fit the 6.0 in the w201 - are you sure about that?
2) The 6.0 heads were known to leak - they're a real PITA. The castings on the earlier heads (like 1987) had lots of faults and the heads could crack or get pinholes. Since you can't go out and buy new heads, you're forced to repair what's there, if they're repairable. Expensive? Oh, yeah. Several thousands if the heads can be saved.
3) Is the car a real AMG with docs?
Seriously, as a guy who's owned two rare AMGs in the past year, I would be extraordinarily interested in this car if you decide to pass. I was warned about the 6.0 heads, but I might accept that permanent issue for a rare car like that.
It's a 16V car, not a 32V car so verifying if it is in fact a 6L is near impossible unless you take the bloody thing apart. Should it be a 6L, no one is making gaskets for the 100mm bore these days. We should have ours ready for sale in the next couple of months though..
Anywho, if the head gaskets popped it's likely been overheated so plan on helicoiling the block and having the heads machined. Also, you'll be pulling the engine and transmission out of the car as doing that work in the car is all but impossible.
I started to chat with the fellow about the car but once I got into details he disappeared which is a HUGE red flad IMHO.

Sounds like the same guy I was talking to, its a shame. I guess Ill start looking elsewhere for an older AMG.

Are you @ UNH? As an aside, finding a Real AMG is A, time consuming and B, costly...more so when you try to restore said AMG to it's former glory!
Either way, should something interesting come up I'll try to forward it your way/or just check up on my site periodically
