Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that the G-Wagen was originally designed for the Shah of Iran who was looking for a light and capable vehicle for moving his troops into battle. The deal fell through when he was desposed, but fortunately the car continued when Argentina stepped in to by them as they were not allowed to buy Land Rovers.

You are correct. After the order for the Shah of Persia fell through, the Argentina Army and the German Border Police took up the slack.
MAGNA International is headquartered in Aurora, Ontario Canada (near Toronto) and they acquired Steyr-Daimler-Puch in 1998.
One would think that the author could have done some simple research to get his facts straight.

Sorry Dutch but I think you're mistaken, as Persia becomes Iran in 1935, hence Shah of Iran in the 70s.
Maxwell, You are indeed correct. However, in 1949 the government allowed both names to be used.
I should have looked, as I was going on the memory of a friend of my father's who, in 1963, had an audience with the Shah of Persia about a major construction project in that country.

There was an article in the Toronto Star about the next group of Canadians being trained in the snow in Quebec for assignment in Kabul. The topography and winter conditions are similar. The DND announced that the Mercedes "Wolf" would be accompnaying them to Kabul to replace the Ilitis jeep. Wolf -kind of a neat name.

Gotta give these folks credit. I sent them an email on Sunday noting the above errors; and they fixed it that afternoon with a word back of thanks for pointing out the errors. I think they were pleased to know that the Canadian Army is purchasing from a company with a Canadian parent. [:o)]
