Vexing rattle in front right spring under engine torque.
In recent weeks, I have lived with a rattle that seemed to come on now and then, as I power-up after shifting, especially from first to second. It has a metalic sound. That is metal on metal. I have been looking everywhere for metal sheeting that might be loose, or other componants that might be telegraphing from distant places in the body. It was clearly coming from the front of the vehicle, however. I have checked clutch linkage fittings, cables, inner fenders, and everything under the vehicle.
Yesterday while greasing the driveline, and checking the grease level of the swivel balls, I rapped on the front springs. The left was fine, but the right front spring gave on odd rattle that had a distinct metal to metal sound. I checked out from top to bottom, and found no breaks or points of contact with the tower or other parts. The whole area is clean and is not rusted in any area, nor does is look out of balance or failing in any way. The shocks in front are new. The springs are double yellow strip. (Orignial equipment, I believe).
I attempted to check the top and bottom of each spring, and they appear to be fully seated as they should be. Nevertheless, if I rap on this spring it sends a distinct metalic sound as it viberates. The rattle is exactly the sound I hear when I drive and make my shift, so I believe that the spring is vibrating in harmony with the engine at specfici torque and rpm levels.
Dai sent an Email that helped me better understand the assembly of the front spring. He notes that there are no rubber cushions on the front, as there are in the rear. Suggested that I pull the spring out and attach a short section of hose to the top ring and bottom ring, and reset the spring. Makes sense. I need to check my picture parts CD for details.
