Hi,
during the tune up i had a thermostat installed, G didn't have one. Without it, the temp gauge wouldn't go higher then a quarter. Now with the themostat in place the gauge goes to the halfway point an a little beyond. Have no taken the G up any mountain road so I don't know if it will go any higher. Is this the weay it's supposed to be. Should I take the radiator to be cleaned?
Thx
Thermostat should keep the needle at the straight-up mark
Mine will go about half way to the next line when hauling uphill with a heavy load in high ambient temps. And drop about a needle width below the line when coasting downhill in cool weather with the heater on.
You're probably perfectly normal unless your temps consistently rise above the next line above mid way.
Having just completely rebuilt my cooling system I will give you my version. What must be remembered is that my system was in a state Thus.. Leaking water pump, scaled rad with a leak in the top tank so was not maintaining pressure also Rad cap was 1987 original and really these should be replaced every 2/3 years to maintain pressure.
I had rad recored, descaled and all solder redone by local co, new pump and hoses, new thermostat and rad cap.
My temp always went to mid position and stayed there unless i was pulling my caravan or trying to get up the hill paste Dover castle... and it would rise to just over the halfway mark.
I learned there is only about a 5-7degree rise in temp between halfway and 3/4
Since doing all that work it sticks just above 1/4 mark, In fact I fitted a temp sensitive fan and removed the fluid one but it rarly comes on even though it is set to switch on just before halfway mark.
I dont know if this help at all but it works really well now and only cost me a total of £280

this may sound stupid but i am not as experienced as most of you
I also have a 300 gd from 1980 (460 - 5 cylinder)and the upper black hose from the radiator to the engine has a different angle into the engine than yours as it is in the picture.
Also ... is that black hose next to the red plastic t joint an alternator breathing hose? Is that expensive to install or should i get a new alternator altogether?
All I can say about the hose is that it is an MB original. So might vary from a pattern part. the one i took of was the same shape too. I still have it in my garage as it was still ok if you have a problem getting one.. I also believe the thermostat housing has changed abit from 80-87 which is the year of my beast so may account for the different shape.
The black hose is indeed from the Alternator I presume it allows the alternator to breath in air from somewhere other than the confined space of a warm engine. It also stops it taking on water if fording. The alternator has a cast unit on the back end to allow for this hose so i presume you would have to try and find one from another vehicle.
The T JOint is not a T joint it is a red cable tie holding the alternator cable still. It was a temporary joint until I found something more substansial to rejoint the alternator cable after I had it rebuilt..
