The electric diff. locks in my 1992 300GE are not engaging. The amber lights come on for each lock, but none of the red lights illuminate. The triangular warning light above the speedo and the ABS warning light both illuminate with the amber diff. lights. I can also turn on the locks out of sequence, which does not seem normal. I've checked everything I can think of, to no avail (fuse OK, fluids OK, battery OK). The only thing that has changed since my last outing when all three locks worked perfectly was the installation of a new battery. Could something have happened when I installed the new battery? Do the locks need to be reset? No other electrical problems are evident. Thanks!

I had a similar problem, except that I couldn't fo the out of sequence deal, with my G500 while on vacation in July.
Some questions:
1.) Can you hear the vacuum pump running when you activate the switch?
2.) Does it keep on running, even though you aren't locking up?
If so, you probably have a vacuum leak somewhere in the control system. On mine, there was a small plastic connector busted. On the engine firewall to the driver's side of the heater air intake plenum If your G300 is at all similar to my G500), there should be a whole series of small rubber hoses with elbows, connectors and various actuators and switches. It's a real maze.
See if you can find a disconnected line or a busted plastic fitting. One of the smaller ones in particular has a very sharp angle, which with heat and vibration could break very easily. That's what it was on mine.
You can also check the lines that plug into the vacuum pump and the double ball shaped vacuum reservoir. The reservoir could also be cracked.
Now, if you can't hear the vacuum pump running (located on the inside left fenderwell towards the front), that might be the problem.
Oh for the simplicity of the old 460 mechanically activated hydraulic system!![:(]

I just looked at the EPC, and your parts for the vacuum system may be on the right side of the engine compartment for your model. Any chance that you could have dislodged a hose while installing the battery?
Everything else in my earlier message applies. Your system has some minor differences, but the basic deal is pretty much the same as mine.
Brian, I would echo what Dutch said. I have knocked them loose inadvertantly while futzing in the engine compartment. The out of sequence part is odd, and I have never lost all of them at once but, I would still look for an errant line. The amber light indicates that it IS trying and the electric part (switch) of the system seems to be working.
Thanks guys. A disconnected vacuum line was the problem. Since the line running from the pump to the switching units was attached to the main battery harness, I must have pulled it loose while changing the battery. I checked some of the other vacuum lines and other fittings, some of which were also loose but still attached. All is well now - the G is ready for the Treffen scouting trip this weekend!
