Engine does barely run after being parked tilted to the passenger side
Yesterday evening I parked my diesel G on the side of a road leaning quite a bit to the passenger side. After I came back after 15 min and started the engine, it was idling unevenly at 500 revs. Not all cylinders fired. Engine stalled several times and did not react much to the throttle.
After I shut off the lights I was able to back out quickly and get the car even again. Power came back almost immediately.
But could you be picking up some water in the bottom of the tank? Maybe the tilt was enough to bring some water setled in the bottom of the tank (ore separator bowl?) to the pickup along with your diesel fuel?
I'm sure others will ahve better ideas than this, I'm not familiar enough with the diesel's workings. But it does seem I've heard this complaint before someplace.

Jan,
Take a look at my earlier posting: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/mess...no=21531&id=22 I had virtually the same thing happen to me. Except that I maybe a bit less fuel and couldn't get it started at all. I was very close to home and ran to get ~20 liters of fuel. That (and a lot of cranking) got it going again.
I think this problem has to do with the shape of the tank. Perhaps the diesel pickup is different? I can't find my EPC to check.
One of the glow plugs burned out this morning. Think it might be due to all the cranking? I presume they are turned on when cranking.
Very perculiar. This is too similar not to be a general issue. I wonder if this issue is the same for all diesels or just the early G300TD.
With the rigurous testing the military do on the diesel G in Europe before they buy a couple of thousand units you would expect they would find a flaw like this.
I actually think there may be different fuel intake systems installed in diesels. The thread you are referring to mentions 2 petrol fuel pumps to tackle the same issue in a petrol G. This means the issue is known in Graz.
This rough running only happened only if I was parked on a significant hill with the front of the car lower than the rear. However, it would clear up while running at that angle in about 5 seconds of so. (Fuel tank was always over one-half full.) My G has been parked in the same spot, but has never had this symtom. The 300 sedan is now in storage, and I never did determine what caused it. Air in the fuel system sounds reasonable. In my simplistic mind, I could see that perhaps when the engine shut down, the fuel in the rear portion of the injection pump might have drained down a bit. It would not take much of a space in the fuel supply to create this problem. I have trouble with the water theory since water is heavier than diesel, it should show up at other times too, and it would take a very severe hill angle to introduce water from the possible sources. And, it should show up as a symptom before the engine is shut down, not after setting for a while.
A related question: Does your 300G turbo occasionally not shut-down when you turn the key to the "off" position? (I am working on a theory.)
Glow plugs generally run for a few seconds BEFORE cranking. Cranking the engine generally shuts down ALL other electrics to give maximum power to the starter. The plugs will often stay on for a while after the engine starts if it is really cold. That is the scenario on my TD pick-ups anyway.
If you recall, this happen to me about ten days
ago.....I have a 2001 G300TD.....I feel the pickup
for the fuel in the tank is in a position that if
parked on the side will pick up "air." When this
happened to me, I had to completely bleed the air
out of the system, and my tank showed that there
was still like two gallons....so keep the tank on
these full.
