Have problems with the fuel injection sistem. 1986 GE280 Mechanic says it's the fuel distribution unit. Can this be rebuilt-recalibrated or do i have to get a new one?
Thanks
Mike
What's the problem? My truck has 300,000 miles on the original fuel distributor. I just don't ever hear of these "wearing out". If you have more informaiton about specific symptoms maybe we can direct you to another potential culprit. Has the full fuel system pressure test come back with all parameters within acceptable ranges? That's the first thing that must be done. System pressure, control pressure, warm-up timing, etc.

The engine runs smooth at idle but sometimes when to accelerating it runs rough and then smoothes out. Will change fuel filter this weekend and take it to another mechanic to see what he comes up with...
thanks,
Mike
Have them check all the fuel pressures, including WHILE it's acting up if at all possible. Also an injector spray pattern test, and air meter baffle plate alignment might be in order. Just some thoughts. See what the second opinion turns up.

Recommend either a large inport concern or a Benz dealer. Ask for a mechanic that has a lot of experience with Continuous Injection Systems (CIS).
I'm with Hipine. It's very rare for the fuel distributor to go bad. Most likely bad culprits in the past for me have been:
- leaky cold start injector
- vacuum leak around the injector seal
- clogged or worn out injectors
- dirty area around the throttle plate (causes restriction of the plate movement)

I had the same problem with my 85 280GE. I cleaned the air plate as suggested and then noticed that the throttle push rod bush (on bulk head beside rocker cover) was worn. The throttle actuating arm was moving slightly causing exactly the same symptoms.
May be worth a look.
I forgot to add that i adjusted the linkage as well to make sure that the nylon bush that is located in the "J" on the throttle mechanism (beside fuel distributor) is fully into the toe of the "J" when cold.
This can be done by making an adjustment to the push rod that comes from the bulk head bush.
About 1" up from the bush is a nut and bolt holding together 2 small flanges. Undo and you will find that one of the flanges is slotted. I moved it up the slot until the nylon bush was in the toe of the J and hey presto seamless acceleration. Prior to this it was about 1/2 wat between the toe and the heel of the "J"
