Has anyone re-built their auto tranny? If so, what did it cost (approx) and who did you have do the work?
Mine has an assortment of problems like poor shifting, especially into 4th when cold, and general slipping when trying to shift into other gears, and a very poor ability to downshift when necessary. I will change the fluid one more time and see if it changes anything. If it doesn't, I think I have to re-build it.[:(]
My local MB mechanic used to do all the auto box rebuilds for Europa. They would ship the trans here to Denver for him to do and return. I had occaision to ask him what kind of a job it was a couple weeks ago. He said he'd have to charge about $800 and need two solid days to work on it, if that tells you anything.

Thanks Dave,
That is actually less than I had anticipated. Lots yes, but still not too bad. Now shipping from here to there and back would probably be another few $$$ as well.
Thanks, this gives me a starting point when looking around.
Does the G tranny have many G specific parts other than the oil pan? ie, can a local M-B mechanic do the job too or would it be best left to someone who knows G trannies? Anyone?
I can't imagine there being anything G-specific about the trans internals. Call Europa and see if they can tell you the Getrag model number. Then ask around for a trans shop that rebuilds that model. If you want to, you can try calling German Motors in Lakewood CO (check Qwestdex.com, I don't have the number handy) and ask for Mark. Having done many of them I'm sure he can tell you what the trans is and how common you should find the rebuilding skills.
