I have been shopping around for the fnt axle bearings.I have run into a bit of a problem. according to my local FAG distributor the FAG taperd roller bearings for the fnt axle are not being made anymore! They can locate ONE set in Germany.
Now, I can get Timken here but after reading on 4X4 ABC the comments RE Timken,I am reluctant to go that route.[I would say there is now possibly worse like possibly FAG Poland?] Has anyone else used any other bearing brands or is there a compatible brand to FAG that is acceptable? If I am doing this job I want to do this right and as close as possible to the correct specs.
Any help AGAIN?
thanks
Irish
I heard the same about the FAGs being unavailable. The FAG site seems to show them, but the distributors I talked to here in Denver, CO USA said they couldn't get them. I ended up buying Timkens of Canadian manufacture. I'll be putting those in one side and the MB brand (say, I should check the mfg code on those!) in the other side. So in a (hopefully) few years, I'll be able to report..... :^)))
Sorry to be so crass, but where did you get you CV joint sets, and what did they cost
Dave,
If you would rather not answer, I undersand. I am anticipating changing mine since once into my front end I really want to fix everything once, and not pay another visit to this location again.

Thanks.
Since I was the one who first used this guy and put Dave on to him, I'm comfortable jumping in with an answer to this question to Dave.

Once there, click on "G-Teile neu", then "Neuteile Vorderachse". The one you want is the first part on the list.
Practice your German before you try to communicate with Franco. He has no English.
For me, the total was just over $500 for two joints including wiring charges, expedited freight, and the poor exchange rate right now. Of course all those costs are variable on top of the original 180 E for each joint as per web site.
In addition to the no english thing, the other thing that makes it a bit of a pain is that he requires the money to be wired to his bank (no US credit cards). So there's a little waiting involved there too.
I was VERY lucky to have a German friend who made the whole thing possible by doing all the e-mailing for me. I never could have done it without him.
