Guys & gals,
I had a worrying incident last nite. When I was driving home from work appx 20 miles.i noticed that i was getting ,like as best as i can describe it a "jump" from the front axle at speeds around 40 mph, which would keep with the speed up to 50/60 mph.[Wasnt going to push it after that].Better way of describing this was it was like a gear of some sort was trying to engage itself.Needless to say i stopped and tried all and various gear selections in the box to clear this. It seems to have departed after the selection and breif drive of the frnt axle diff lock.
When i got home however there seems to be now a ticking sound coming from the right wheel[am off to strip down after this epistile].What I need to know is this the G way of saying change the bearings NOW.[am overdue this job].Has anyone come across this "jump" type problem before? Would you say an axle or box problem? It obviously isnt chronic yet! due to the irregularity of the noise or whatever. So i preclude damaged cogs ,splines whatever.Only other thing I can think is possibly the frnt diff lock cylinder trying to engage. As i did have to remove the centre console yesterday to redo the hbrake cables. But why after 40 plus miles of driving?
Any advise ,info GREATLY required .
thanks

If it is, don't buy the MB part which includes the CV joint and the half axles for very big ££'s. Get the Spidan CV joint kit. It's the exact same part and is built for MB by Spidan for about half price.
since you say that you are overdue on replacing the wheel bearings - you should act NOW!
I had the same "jump" action once - the tapered rollers were leaving their cage.
tow bill = $785 (I was far awar from the next possibility of repair)
parts = >$1,500 (the damage was horrendous)
The clicking sound is often made by a cracked cage in the CV joint. You're right to say it's not terminal, in that you COULD drive the car in an emergency. But you will be doing more damage to other components and the job getting more expensive as you go further.
As dutch said, you can get the CVs cheaper than through MB. Europa quoted $800 for just the short side shaft/CV assembly. I got a pair of Spidan CVs from the fellow Dutch recommended (see my post from a few weeks ago about hub carnage for the source) for just over $500 US including express shipping and the euro/dollar conversion. His list is 180 euro each.
But in any case, get it opened up and KNOW what's wrong before you decide whether to drive it further.
Well, it wasnt in the front axle at all.Although it IS going in for a bearing change within the next 14 days. [E145 for bearings, E 90 for seal kit appx E 300 for labour . Enough in these recessionary times.]Turns out it was in the REAR BRAKE DRUM.Caused by my own stupidity
[xx(]
I changed the handbrake cables four days ago[not without its own exitement].What I forgot to replace was the spring washer that pushes out the bar between the drums. That worked its way under the hub and brake shoe and made pretty much Shite of the brake lining, new relining required yet again
Moral; be sure ALL parts are back in place.
I went back thru the posts for the carnage.Lovely!! Thanks for the nightmares tonite guys! Is Spidan that GZR BOhme web link.{guy is reasonable BTW for European pricesGoing to talk to him monday Re the bearing prices they are better than local quotes.}
If it isnt could somone please post a link or contact for SPIDAN
Thanks

Glad for you it wasn't the front (expensive) stuff.
The other day I had a clicking noise in my rear brake - so I thought. Took it apart. Nothing. Put the vehicle (99 Jeep TJ) on the stands. Clicking came from inside the diff. My bloood pressure rose. Took it apart. Was the center bolt of the spider gears - it had broken in half. I was happy to have cought it in time before more damage could develop.
This could not have happened on the G since it has a solid star for the spiders. This proves that the praised Dana 44 is still not as strong as a G's diff.
I have heard an awful lot of nightmare stories about the bearing on the G.. as I am quite new to this myself could someone tell me what to do to prevent any damage I am very fastidious with servicing any of my vehicles so would like to keep on top of a problem by knowing what to look out for. I have just joined our club here in the UK the GWOA and managed to get a full workshop manual for the 460/463 range on CD ROM for all of £15 but I would like your inputs too....
