Cutting the flat glass is one option. The other is to use the 463 windshield from an MBUSA dealer.
I've had to do this when I broke my windshield trying to remove it when painting my truck. Just make a template of the old one on a piece of cardboard and bring it to a glass shop. My new one was 1/4 in. thick, and only cost $30 to have made. You can easily install it yourself (and someone else)with ample amounts of soap and string.
Also, the original glass is a bronze tint. Most commonly available safety plate in the USA is a green tint. Personally, I like the visibility through the green tint better anyway, so that's what I had them use. But the bronze can be had if you want it. Mine was about $150 cut and installed by my local glass shop. They were able to re-use my old gasket.
Advantage of buying the 463 glass is that it has a little black out patch above the rear view mirror to cover the area not blocked out by the visors. You could do this yourself of course if you really wanted it. I like all the open glass area I can get, and sun shining through this spot isn't a problem for me.
I thought the list price on the MB glass was somewhere around $300 for just the part (intallation extra), but I'm not sure.

I do NOT like that black patch above the mirror on my G500. I am tall. When going around a downhill right turn (lots of them off road!), I like to be able to use the open glass above the mirror to see better where I have the truck aimed. That black patch makes a blind spot for me. I wish there was a way to scrape it off.

Don't do that in Germany. Youre are not allowed to use a diffrent Windscreen than the Original one. If you have a look on the old (broken) Windscreen you'll find a number on it. You have to have this number on it, otherwhise your car will not allowed to be driven on public roads.
Are you planning to use your GPS/laptop/mapping SW on your vacation trip? I'm curious how you have this set up and how it works for you.
Oh, wait, I'm just remembering, you got a SP3 didn't you.
Well, I KNOW you'll just LOVE that. Get your routes mapped out in the PC and loaded up before you go. I broke them into smaller (maybe 4hr drive worth) bits and broke them up anywhere I had potential alternate routes. It was a total treat having a constant real-time voice navigator warning me ahead of time of every turn.
If you need any of teh CDs I might be able to help.

I'll mostly use the SP3, although I like the DeLorme Topo program better than Garmin's. With the DeLorme Topo set, I can draw in a routeable road or trail; and use it to set my routes. I haven't figured out how to use the delorme software with the Garmin SP3. I don't think I can.
My wife doesn't like the voice prompts on the Garmin, so I'll probably keep that feature either very low or off.
I appreciate the CD loan offer, but I'm not sure how I would use them.
I CALLED EUROPA, THEY WANTED 250 FOR THE WINDSHIELD AND 75 FOR THE GASKET, BUT i CALLED A GLASS SHOP, THEY TOLD ME TO BRING THE CAR IN, IM SURE IT WILL BE MUCH CHEAPER, BY THE BY THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP
