German Star Parts

Well, my fuel pump has been buzzing on long hot trips, so I thought it prudent to look into a replacement and relegate this one to the spares box, since the fuel pump is one of only two parts of this vehicle that are absolutely mission critical and prone to sudden failure.

I decided to give Ron at German Star parts in Phoenix AZ a try. The fuel pump is not a G-specific part, and he seemed to have a pretty good price when I looked up the part number (002.091.97.01) on his website. Ron's price on this unit was $169, compared to the DCAG PL55 list price of 173 EU. I also discovered by searching for the fuel filter part number (002.477.19.01) on Ron's site, that this part is also used on early 500SLs, and so pretty common. I ordered one of those as well, and this time it was $15 vs the DCAG price of 33 EU.

I placed the order by e-mail last week and the parts arrived today ($8 shipping). I was pleased to find the fuel pump was the OEM Bosch unit, not some generic part. And the filter was the high quality Hengst brand that trusted MB mechanics use.

All in all, a great experience and I will try to shop there again in the future on non-460 parts.

-Dave G.
Re: WANTED:Fuel pump replacement tips

Disconnect one of the fuel lines under the bonnet(hood)going to the fuel distributor.Connect that to a flexible pipe and into a jerry can ,Over ride the fuel pump relay and the fuel pump will transfer the tank contents to the jerry can.Hey pesto empty fuel tank.

Roly

OF COURSE!

So simple when you know how. Yet another reason to replace it proactively while the pump is still working, eh?

Thanks Roly!

-Dave G.

Re: WANTED:Fuel pump replacement tips

Now that's a good tip! Obvious once stated, but that's what makes it great!

My tip is to slip a set of needle nose vice grips over the 'intake' line going into the fuel pump. Won't keep it form leaking on you a bit, but it helps.

Re: WANTED:Fuel pump replacement tips

And that one's useful for the roadside repair where the pump has already failed and the first one is not an option.

Covering all the bases. Very cool.

Weather is too nice to drive the G, and the tank is full so my fuel pump repair may be put off until July 4th, unless I decide to use 'Q's tip'.

-Dave G.
