2002 G Stereo Headunit Upgrade

So I have searched around the forums but am not sure I have a complete picture of what an upgrade looks like so I am hoping you can help confirm a few things. I have a 2002 G500 with the standard COMAND head unit and I want to swap it out for a double din unit with iPod integration. My understanding is that there are programable units that will take advantage of the steering wheel controls (Axxess or iDatalink). Also you can use the adapter faceplate from a 2004 C class. The wiring harness is a bit of a question but shouldnt be hard to figure out.

A few questions.
1. Does anyone know which wiring harnesses work out of the box?
2. Is this rumor you have to keep the COMAND unit installed somewhere in the car false? Anything you are giving up by removing it (other than maybe that onscreen display of what radio station is on in the dash)
3. Are the current speakers and amp usable with a wiring harness? someone told me that the system is optical like my porsche 911 (nightmare to replace) but I dont think so and they should be reusable?

Any other pointers would be great. I am not looking for a huge improvement in sound but rather simple iphone integration. I looked at installing the aux input and V60 bluetooth hookup but that actually seems like its going to be as much money.

Thoughts?

This post will give you all the information you need. Scroll further down the page and you will see the parts needed along with links.

The wiring should just be plug and play and it is an easy install.
